How can I make my mornings better? I have classes but am not a morning person. At all. When I wake up I feel exhausted, depressed, not hungry, and my head feels like its going to explode. Then I don't put any thought into my appearance which makes my day worse. Ergg

Babe, you’re asking the least morning-y person in the world. My mom used to have to forcibly drag me out of bed (especially in the winter because of my S.A.D., ugh).

I recently got this app called Sleep Cycle which is supposed to track where you are in your sleep cycle (based on your movements or something??) and then wake you up at the lightest point of the cycle within the timeframe you need to get up at, so that you feel less drowsy upon waking. My sleep schedule is really messed up right now so I haven’t had much occasion to test it, but it gets excellent reviews.

If you wake up with a headache as you say, I’d recommend checking in with your hydration status. Do you drink enough water on the regular? Does your room maybe need a humidifier? I know I tend to wake up feeling awful if my room is too dry.

Other suggestions that are kind of boring but also important: give up most/all of your caffeine intake, at least after 2pm or so. Get more exercise so you’ll feel sleepier at night and sleep more soundly. Try some nighttime yoga before you go to sleep. Consider wearing a sleeping mask. Stay away from screens for an hour before bedtime. Lay out your outfit the night before so you won’t have to think about it in the morning. Learn and practice a really quick makeup look you can do in under 5 minutes, or take your makeup with you so you can do it on your way to school/work or when you get there. Set your alarm to something that makes you happy, like a favorite song (mine was “The Leave Behind” by Fort Christmas for ages and I loved it). Get some really delicious coffee or tea so you’ll feel excited to get up and get into your day.

Good luck! We’re in this together, my friend…
