Oh wow, yes, that’s right - prioritize jacking-off material, not the numerous testimonies that have come out of the porn industry concerning women porn-stars being raped/abused on set every single fucking day.

Or the fact that 87% of women, earning money as sex-workers, do not actually wish to be in the sex industry.

Yeah, whatever, your wank-bank is obviously more important than the lives and experiences of the women you’re wanking to. It does not mean a thing when women like Shelley Lubben come forward and basically state, “What’s going on is basically the modern day slave-trade and every day, women porn-stars are getting beaten, raped and force-fed drugs whilst at work".

Because that is what’s really important here - your right to view porn.

yo dudes. read this and learn from it.

ignore the knee jerk reactions you wanna give and just simmer for about ten minutes after you read it all, digest the information.

Feminist porn is ‘kosher’, though, right?

There is no such thing as ‘feminist porn’. Are you alright, sir? I reckon you’re in need of a nice, tall glass of do your fucking research.

I actually disagree with your statement about there not being “feminist" porn, because there really are quite a bit of indie and queer and sex positive porn out there, and the Feminist Porn Awards do a great job of honouring the actors, actresses, directors, etc involved in making ethical and positive porn that doesn’t harm anybody in production. I agree that the mainstream porn industry can and is extremely degrading and offensive and harmful to the women involved. On the other hand, there are women in the mainstream porn industry who say positive things about their experiences. Whether or not these things are true is another story. Basically, I disagree with you on this: there is such a thing as feminist porn.

Amen. I know for a fact that everything directed by Shine Louise Houston and Tristan Taormino is produced ethically and consensually. They even allow performers to pick which people they’d like to perform with, based on mutual attraction and trust.

Feminist porn exists. There is no sense in being an “anti-porn feminist," because it’s not porn that’s the problem, it’s a small minority of the people working in porn. They are the toxic abusers, not the medium itself.

There is nothing wrong with loving yourself.
There is nothing wrong with approving of yourself.
There is nothing wrong with thinking you are beautiful (sometimes, all the time, or at all).
There is nothing wrong with congratulating yourself on doing something great or something difficult.
There is nothing wrong with self-care and self-pampering.

Anyone who tells you different is insecure or jealous or both. Seriously, don’t waste your time with people who think self-love is a waste of time.

hey! i want to stop wearing a bra and grow out my arm pit hair. firstly, i hate bras, they never fit me right. i'm a 36 C and although it makes my breasts look perky and full i hate the hassle. the issue is i am afraid that since my breasts are more saggy then perky it will not look good at all. i am also afraid my breasts will sag even more. as for the armpit hair i am afraid my boyfriend will not find my attractive anymore, and that i wil be judged by others. what is your advice? thanks

I think you should get your breasts measured by a professional if you haven’t already. I used to wear a 36B and it turned out I’m actually a 32D. My properly-fitted bras make me look and feel a lot better.

You could also check out non-standard bra options, like “bralettes” and bras without underwires. I find them soooooo much more comfortable than the underwired kind.

If you reeeally don’t want to wear a bra, one last option you could try is those stretchy tank tops that have a built-in shelf bra. They’re often sold at places that have good basics, like American Apparel and Gap.

You could try going totally braless, but the options above are good for if you find you’re not happy with how your boobs look without a bra.

As for armpit hair, you might want to have a chat with your boyfriend about it if that’s what you’re worried about.

I hang out in a lot of queer/feminist spaces and I STILL find it hard to be out in public with armpit hair, to be honest. It makes me feel unpretty and like people are staring at me.

I’d recommend that you examine your motivations for doing these things. Is it for comfort/laziness reasons (i.e. you find bras insufferably uncomfortable on your ribcage and you’re tired of constantly having to shave your pits)? If so, there are workarounds – more comfortable options (wireless bras, bralettes), less annoying options (epilators, periodic waxing), etc. If you want to do them to be transgressive or to make a statement, that’s cool too. But you gotta be brave to do that. Braver than me, anyway!

I would suggest you find some lady role models who have pit hair and rock it, like Amanda Palmer or Sadie Lune. Any time you’re feeling nervous/insecure about yo’ pits, just imagine you’re one of those ladies.

And if you really hate it, don’t feel like you have to stick with it. Femme is a legitimate identity, and many femmes take care of their bodies in conventionally feminine ways, and it doesn’t mean they’re any less transgressive, feminist, or strong. It’s just the way they like to look, and that is THEIR CHOICE completely.

but then again, its kind like putting a meat suit on and telling a shark not to eat you

We (men) are not fucking sharks!

We are not rabid animals living off of pure instinct

We are capable of rational thinking and understanding.

Just because someone is cooking food doesn’t mean you’re entitled to eat it.

Just because a banker is counting money doesn’t mean you’re being given free money.

Just because a person is naked doesn’t mean you’re entitled to fuck them.

You are not entitled to someone else’s body just because it’s exposed.

What is so fucking difficult about this concept?

I noticed on your amazon wishlist, you listed Danskin tights in tan, but would you wear a pair in black or pink? And, how much do you really enjoy wearing tights? Just wondering

This seems like a question only an exploitative fetishist would ask.

Anyway… I wear tights pretty frequently, in a wide array of colors. And I don’t do so for the approval or titillation of legwear fetishists.

this happened because showing labia minora was considered too explicit for magazines so to get around it they only showed people who didn’t have externally protruding labia minora or airbrushed out those that did. Now it’s become normalized to the point of, well, this.

The "turnoff" "turnon" game. Ask me anything and I will answer if it is a turn off or turn on.

hi kate, i love your blog and noticed you have a great skin routine. My skin breaks out easily, and i usually havea few blemishes on my face at a time. I'm starting to think maybe i should give up makeup? even though it makes my face appear more clear should i stop wearing it for the long term?

You should see a dermatologist if you can. I’m not a skin expert and I don’t know your skin, so a derm would be a better advisor than me, certainly!

I know that some people find they break out less when they use mineral makeup. You might also want to look at and/or post in

how do i find a dermatologist? usually i just ask my doctor. do they cost money to see if you do not have insurance?

I don’t know where you live so I can’t really answer that. Here in Toronto, though, if I were in your shoes, I’d go see my general practitioner and ask for a referral to a derm. I think it would be covered by OHIP, though any medications/prescription skincare products would not.

Again, I’m not a healthcare expert so I’d advise talking to your doctor if you’re curious about this stuff.

What would you pack in a bare-minimum makeup kit for traveling?

I think I’m going to bring liquid eyeliner, powder foundation, my eyebrow kit, and a big brush. And then for skincare, little travel-sized vials of Mario Badescu Enzyme Cleansing Gel and Seaweed Night Cream.

What would you bring?

5 things you need this autumn

1. Forever Nuts tea. I think this is my favorite tea I’ve ever tried, and I am a tea freak. It contains almonds, apple, cinnamon, and beetroot – pretty simple, and yet, ridiculously delicious. It’s not caffeinated, so if you’re one of those “I can’t function without my morning coffee” people then you should look elsewhere, but for the rest of y’all, there is no tea I recommend more highly than this one. I think I’ll try to get my hands on a travel mug so I can tote this to school every fucking morning come September.

2. Starr Crunch slouchy beanies. I have done way more than my fair share of trawling Etsy for hand-knit treasures, and Starr Crunch remains my favorite shop for such things. I have four of her hats (one rainbow striped, one blue-and-black striped, one blue-and-teal striped, and one pink-on-pink striped) and they are on my head all the damn time throughout fall, winter, and spring. They have the perfect amount of slouch, and don’t do that weird, stiff, voluminous thing that some knit hats do. They are the ideal cool-and-casual solution for dirty hair days. I think I might need to buy some more in the coming weeks…

3. A bold lipstick. I respect your right to reject makeup outright if you wanna, but it drives me nuts when otherwise pro-cosmetics women say things like, “I couldn’t possibly wear bright lipstick!” or “Every lipstick makes me look terrible!” Lies, all lies. Y’all just haven’t found the right shade(s) yet. I implore you to trot down to your local MAC counter (or whatever is your makeup purveyor of choice) and ask the salesfolks for help picking out your perfect pink, red, or purple. (My faves? MAC Heartless, MAC Russian Red, and – uh, even though I hate this brand for ethical reasons – Lime Crime Poisonberry.)

4. An amazing scarf or cowl. I am lucky in that one of my best friends is a knitter, and she made me the most gorgeous cowl of all time last winter. I also had a (no longer with us) grandmother who knitted voraciously, and I have a couple great scarves that she made me. If you have friends who knit, I advise you to bribe them with food or favours so they’ll make you something cozy and colorful to keep you warm all winter.

5. A cashmere sweater. No need to shell out zillions of dollars; head to a nice vintage shop in your area (Torontonians: get yo’ ass to Kensington Market) and you may find a cashmere treasure. If you have no luck at in-person vintage spots, search online – there are often great deals on cashmere stuff on Etsy and eBay. They may have small holes or other imperfections, but they’ll still keep you warm as hell.

What are your autumn/winter must-haves?

Question for my trans* and/or genderqueer followers:

Is it appropriate to use gender-neutral pronouns (e.g. ze/hir) in situations where I would ordinarily use “(s)he” because I don’t know the pronoun (e.g. “I hope I like my teacher this year and that (s)he likes me”), or should gender-neutral pronouns be reserved for people who actually identify as gender-neutral/genderqueer/etc.?

I have a folder of all the best e-mails I’ve ever received – mostly long, articulate, complimentary pieces of writing from people I love and/or admire – and I read them over when I’m feeling sad or lost. It is a really good idea to have a sort of “emotional first aid kit” like this. I highly recommend.
