One of the best songwriting discoveries I ever made is that sometimes it helps to put myself in the shoes of a fictional character and try to write from their emotional standpoint, about their situation. Or try to imagine that a fictional character (from a TV show I’m into, or whatever) is actually in my life, and write about how I would react to that sort of person.
I wrote a new song tonight and it’s about a TV show character and it’s actually preeeetty good. Also a lot of my early-2011 songs are about Radio Free Roscoe characters and I have a Pam&Jim song. This shit works.
