A woman is twenty times more likely to die during childbirth or from complications during pregnancy than she is during a first trimester abortion. The dangers of pregnancy include haemorrhage, infection, eclampsia, and obstructed labour. Over 500 000 women die every year from these complications.Obviously, woman also choose to become pregnant everyday. They weigh the situation, both pros and cons, and come to find the risks acceptable for the the reward they will receive in the end. The key word there, though, is choose. They choose to accept those risks. To say that a woman who has weighed those same pros and cons, and has found the risks unacceptable, should not be able to make a choice related to the well being of her own body is insane.
Those who stand against abortion often say that while a woman should be able to make choices related to her own body, she should not be able chose who lives and dies. But by removing abortion as an option, those same people would be putting thousands of women every year in medical danger. Those people would be choosing to put women into a situation that they would not be in, were they allowed to make their own choices, and where there is chance that they will die. They would be forcing unwilling women to live with a medical condition that kills at least one person every minute.
Yes, you can claim that an embryo is a life, but I can say for sure that the woman carrying it is alive, and if she does not find the risks of pregnancy acceptable, then she should not be expected to remain pregnant. She should not be forced to live for nine months in a dangerous medical situation, because SOMEONE ELSE told her she had to. I’m much more interested in protecting her well being, her life, and her choices.
If you honestly do believe in choice for women, then you should respect a woman’s choice to protect her own health.
