I've been struggling a lot with my weight lately and my size and with food. Technically i'm not that fat (5'3'', around 122 lbs) but i feel disgusting and i'm really unhappy with myself. I hate dieting and counting calories and i don't want to stop eating but I really want to lose weight. what should i do?

(TW: WEIGHT STUFF, of course. Please skip this post if discussions of weight, calories, etc. triggers you or bothers you in any way!)

I’m gonna start this with my usual spiel about the importance of checking in with doctors and psychology professionals before you make decisions about your health. I bet your GP could give you some tailored nutritional advice or could refer you to someone else who could. Either that or you could get a referral to a psychiatrist who could help you with body image issues, dysphoria, etc. and keep an eye on you to make sure you don’t delve into unhealthy territory, psychologically or physically. These issues are very fraught and can easily lead to serious problems like eating disorders so it’s unwise to go it alone.

That said, as I’ve said before, the only weight loss method that’s ever, ever, ever worked for me is counting calories. I also increased my exercise and entered it into my calorie tracker app (MyFitnessPal) so I’d know how much extra I was allowed to eat on days that I exercised.

Weight loss happens through some combination of limiting calories and exercising more, so if you don’t want to do the former, you gotta do the latter. Food is an easier method than exercise, though, simply because it takes less effort and planning to eat (for example) 200 fewer calories a day than it does to burn off 200 extra calories a day. Calories are surprisingly hard to burn off in any significant quantities.

Exercising, though, has the added benefits of making you feel stronger and more capable in your body and increasing your endorphin levels, so I think you should really consider it! Even when I totally hate my body, I find I feel better about it when I’m done working out, because a) at least I’ve done something productive and b) it shows me that my body is capable of great things and has the capacity to be strong and powerful.

Hope that helps. Stay safe. Journal about your feelings. Talk to your doc. Work on your self-love always always always. Don’t let media myths pull you in.
