I think that one of my best friends is depressed. She moved to a different state to go to college and spent almost everyday inside watching Netflix alone. She now says she went away to school because her parents wanted her to. Now she's home and can't find a job because she has little motivation and little work experience. She doesn't eat healthy or ever do healthy activities or go outside. And I think that she's in denial about her state of being. I've only been friends with her for a few

(cont’d) years and at first thought she was just super laid back, but I’m starting to think it’s a bigger issue. I don’t know how to handle it. I’m starting to feel guilty by acting like everything is fine when she does things like call herself a “fat ass” or obsessive over the past (like crushes from when she was 15 when she’s now in her 20’s) but also know I’m not in any place to try and “fix her.” Do you have any advice on how to deal with his?

You can mention something like, “Hey, have you ever thought about getting checked out for depression?” but you can’t force someone to admit they have an issue or to seek treatment for it. They have to realize it themselves, to a certain extent.

You could also ask her if there’s anything you can do to emotionally support her further, though if she’s in denial like you say, she may not ask for or accept help.

Beyond that, I don’t know if there’s anything you can really do. Someone has to be willing to help themselves at least a little in order to get help.
