1. If it’s not unhealthy (physically, emotionally or otherwise), why not just indulge? Let the desire feel GOOD, rather than torturous.
2. Write 100 things about it. 100 thoughts, musings, details. Bore yourself, work the obsession so it loses its appeal.
3. Talk out loud. Pretend to be on the phone with someone who wants to hear ALL about it.
4. Replace it.
5. Distract yourself. (Safely.)
6. Be, or make, a better person/thing than whatever you are obsessed with. How can you be more interesting, lovable, or addictive? What can you create that someone might become obsessed with? Do it!
7. If it’s an obsessive unfulfilled desire: put yourself in the feeling-place of someone who HAS what you want, so you’ll either attract it to yourself or not need it so desperately. (Remember: whatever feeling you think it can create in you, you can feel that way RIGHT NOW if you want to.)
8. Think about it obsessively & exclusively for an entire hour & then stop.
9. Yell, scream, beat up a pillow, throw a tantrum. This works best if your ultimate goal is to get yourself to start laughing hysterically out of exhilaration.
10. Put yourself in the mind of someone else & write about THEIR obsessions.
11. Make the obsession PRODUCTIVE - turn it into art!
12. Revisit an old obsession. How did that feel? How did you get out of it?
