Hey Kate, I'm dealing with a lot of fallout from a past sexually abusive relationship and it's messing with my current, healthy one. I think at one point I remember you mentioned going to therapy, and I was wondering, if you didn't mind, if you could direct me to any services in Toronto that might be able to offer me something. I'm kind of broke and scared and I can't seem to find anything specifically for abuse victims so I thought some general counselling might be better than nothing?

Oh dear. I’m very very sorry that you’re going through this. *massive hugs if you’re cool with that*

If you live in the southeast Toronto area and/or are LGBT, the Sherbourne Health Centre is a great option that can provide free counselling to people who need it. (If you’re straight, don’t be scared off by their LGBT affiliations; they may still be able to help you out. Give ‘em a call.)

The 519 Community Centre is also LGBT-focused, but again, I don’t think it’ll be an issue at all if you’re straight. They offer up to 6 free counselling sessions followed by a referral to an affordable counselling service.

I’d also recommend you talk to Planned Parenthood – call them at (416) 961-0113 and ask for help finding mental health services. Many of their services are free, and they have specialists who are trained in topics including sexual violence.

If you are a post-secondary student, your school may have free or discounted mental health services you can access. If you are a high school student, your guidance counsellor may be able to connect you with someone.

I hope that helps. Best of luck to you, love.
