I’ve been using Lipcote for about a month now, and wanted to share my thoughts on it.
It’s supposed to be a product that seals your lipstick, making it stay on much longer, including through meals, kissing, etc.
I have found that it works pretty well, but there are a few caveats:
First, you have to use a lipstick that has a fairly dry formula. You should always blot a few times before applying Lipcote, but if the lipstick you’re wearing is too moist/creamy, blotting won’t really help that much. I’ve had the best luck with lipsticks that are almost uncomfortably dry, like anything by Lime Crime, or Kat Von D’s liquid lipstick, or MAC Russian Red. Moist lipsticks tend to slide off after a couple of hours, even with Lipcote applied on top.
Secondly, even Lipcote cannot save your lipstick from greasy foods that get rubbed on your lips. You still have to be careful when you eat. I’ve successfully eaten at even super-greasy places like Harvey’s and McDonalds without my lipstick coming off when wearing Lipcote, but it was because I was being careful not to touch too much food to my lips. When it does touch my lips a lot, my lipstick tends to come off or clump up in a really gross-looking way.
Thirdly, it smells weird and kind of burns when you first put it on, which is easy enough to get used to - and it does tend to dry out lips, so I’d recommend you take days off from time to time and just wear lip balm, so your lips don’t shrivel up and die.
Overall though, I’m really pleased with the product. It fulfills the purposes I need it to fulfill: my lipstick lasts through hours of classes and often through a couple of drinks (whether daytime drinks like coffee and tea, or nighttime drinks like beers). I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this product to someone who was having trouble keeping their lipstick on.
