Being involved in anti-oppression communities (e.g. LGBT issues, feminism) is really strange when you’re privileged (which I am, very much – I’m white, “appear to be straight,” and come from a well-off family).
There are all these messages all over my communities that are basically like “Fuck privileged people! They’re ruining the world!” and then I have to remind myself that I am a part of that group, even if I’m not the one doing the shitty stuff that we rail against.
Still working on reconciling being privileged with the understanding that privilege shouldn’t be used to hurt people or assert power over those less privileged.
I like the phrase “Check yo’ privilege!” because it’s such an efficient way of summing up that idea: be aware of the way your privilege causes you to interact with the world, and do your best to ensure that you don’t do anything stupid or cruel with it, by accident or on purpose.
